Stephen Jackson has never been shy about where he stands in the Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James GOAT debate—and his latest take on LeBron’s move to Philadelphia is guaranteed to spark another round of arguments.
Appearing on All The Smoke, Jackson explained that he believed LeBron had one particular move left that could have strengthened his case against Jordan and Kobe Bryant: returning to Cleveland and winning another championship with the Cavaliers.
Instead, LeBron chose the Philadelphia 76ers, joining a roster that already features Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and newly acquired Jaylen Brown.
Jackson admitted Philadelphia caught him completely off guard.
“I thought everywhere in the world, but Philly.”
For Jackson, the issue isn’t whether LeBron can win in Philadelphia. It’s how much another championship would add to his legacy if he wins it with a team that was already viewed as a legitimate contender.
“I thought for me, that made the most sense because all the talk you hear about the GOATs and him comparing him to Jordan and Kobe,” Jackson said, explaining why Cleveland would have been different.
Jackson believes another championship in Cleveland would have carried significantly more weight.
The Cavaliers already have a talented roster, but Jackson viewed LeBron returning home and leading Cleveland to another championship as a much bigger challenge than joining an established contender.
“You the best player in the league, as you say,” Jackson said. “So going to a team that’s already championship ready, that’s not what I would look at as the best player in the league challenging himself.”
The former NBA champion acknowledged that LeBron has every right to make his own decision—and Jackson has every right to criticize it.
“He’s done it before, and he has the right to make his own decision, just like I have the right to my opinion,” Jackson said.
But his conclusion was blunt: he doesn’t believe joining Philadelphia was the kind of move he would expect from someone he considers the best player in the league.
Jackson’s argument is essentially that LeBron’s final chapter should have been about taking on the biggest challenge possible, not simply putting himself in the best position to win another championship.
That distinction could become even more important if Philadelphia ultimately wins the NBA championship.
LeBron is entering his 24th NBA season, and at this stage of his career, every playoff run carries additional weight. A championship in Philadelphia could give James a fifth ring and further strengthen an already historic résumé.
But Jackson believes the destination matters.
If LeBron had returned to Cleveland and delivered another championship to the franchise he famously brought its first NBA title in 2016, Jackson believes that accomplishment would have been more meaningful in the GOAT conversation.
Now, LeBron has a different challenge in Philadelphia: win another championship and prove that the move Jackson criticized was ultimately the right one.
