Penny Hardaway found not to have violated NCAA rules

Via Mark Schlabach and Jeff Borxello of ESPN An Independent Accountability Resolution Process hearing panel concluded that Memphis Tigers basketball coach Penny Hardaway didn’t violate NCAA rules when he provided benefits to three prospective student-athletes because of his long-standing philanthropy in Memphis, according to a decision released on Tuesday. The IARP panel ruled that Memphis failed to monitor the education and activities of an athletics booster, provided impermissible extra benefits, conducted impermissible recruiting activities with prospective student-athletes and failed to cooperate with the investigative process by delaying the production of requested documents.…

University of Memphis Basketball facing fines and probation over James Wiseman recruiting

The NCAA placed the University of Memphis men’s basketball program for three years and levied a $5,000 fine for Level II and III recruiting violations. The ruling came about following allegations that back in 2017 then-East High School head coach Penny Hardaway paid James Wiseman and his family when he was still in high school. The NCAA considered him a booster because he had donated to his alma mater. Hardaway did not become Memphis coach until tne following year, 2018.
