North Carolina Central tennis receives ITA Academic Awards

Courtesy of NC Central Athletics The North Carolina Central University men’s and women’s tennis teams were recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as Division I All-Academic Teams for the 2023-24 season. The criteria for receiving ITA All-Academic Team honors include a team qgrade point average of 3.2 or above. In 2024, 176 men’s programs and 255 women’s programs earned this team distinction. Albany State Tennis finishes 3rd in SIAC

Despite not winning the conference title this weekend, the team was able to defeat the Panthers of Clark-Atlanta University in the consolation at the SIAC Tournament, 5-2. Asia Raulerson, Bianca Leao, Carla Sorroche and Sumana Panauganti were all victorious in their singles matches. In doubles competition, Leao and Panauganti claimed their match 6-2 ; Doylisha Copeland and Allyah Williams were also victors, winning match by a 6-2 count as well. With the win the Golden Rams complete the 2022 season with an 18-6 record.

WTA suspends all Chinese tournaments over worry about Peng Shuai

From the BBC: The Women’s Tennis Association has announced the immediate suspension of all tournaments in China amid concern for Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai. Peng, 35, disappeared from public view for three weeks after accusing a top Chinese official of sexual assault. WTA chief Steve Simon said he had “serious doubts” that Peng was “free, safe and not subject to intimidation”. “In good conscience, I don’t see how I can ask our athletes to compete there,” he said. Companies severing ties with Sharapova

The financial implications from Maria Sharapova’s failed doping test, have already become apparent, as several companies are cutting ties with the tennis star. Shortly after news of the announcement broke, athletic apparel giant, Nike suspended the 8 year/ $70 million deal that included a clothing line, which was extended in 2010. Maria Sharapova admits to using banned substance 

Tennis star Maria Sharapova announced today that she tested positive for the banned substance meldonium, which was initially developed in Latvia for heart patients to aid oxygen flow. Speaking earlier today at a Los Angeles press conference, Sharapova stated she been taking meldonium since 2006 and that she did not realize it was on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned substances list.
