TSU softball falls to No.4 Coastal Carolina

The Tennessee State softball team suffered defeat to Coastal Carolina and No. 4 Florida in the Bubly Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOT 3RD: Coastal Carolina’s freshman, Jay Wrightsman, led the off the inning with a bunt single. Payton Ebersole reached base on a fielder’s choice and stole second base after a pop-up bunt. With two outs, Abbey Montoya singled up the middle to give the Chanticleers an early lead. Montoya stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the TSU catcher, Kayli Mothershed. Riley Zana laced an RBI double to right field to extend the lead. Iyanla De Jesus recorded a double of her own to score Zana from second base. || CCU, 3-0

TOP 7TH: Coastal Carolina brought De Jesus into the circle to enter the seventh inning. Marisa Mauroschadt pinch-hit for senior shortstop Lauren Farias to lead off the final at-bat. Mauroschadt, a junior outfielder, reached on a free-pass and advanced to second on a groundout. The Tigers battled against the new pitcher as Kayli Mothershed and Ryla Traylor reached via base-on-balls. After De Jesus walked the bases loaded, CCU brought in Mady Volpe for the save opportunity. With the bases-juiced, Mauroschadtscored on a wild pitch and moved the tying run into scoring position. With runners on second and third with one out, Volpe was able to escape the jam with back-to-back strikeouts. || CCU, 3-1

INSIDE THE STATS:

  • Francys King made her fifth start of the year as she went three innings, allowing three runs on five hits and struck out one batter.
  • Caitlyn Manus entered the circle in relief and tossed with three scoreless innings.
  • Lauryn Kinkle collected the lone hit for TSU.
  • Tennessee State collected three of four walks in the seventh inning.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Tennessee State held Coastal Carolina to three runs in consecutive games.
  • Half of Coastal’s hits were for extra bases; three doubles in six hits.
  • In two games between TSU and CCU, Riley Zana went 4-for-7 with two doubles, a homer and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOT 3RD: UF’s Katie Kistler led off the third inning with a double to left center and stole third base. Hannah Adams drove in Kistler to give the fourth-ranked Gators an early lead. Adams used her speed to acquire second and third base via the stolen base. Skylar Wallace, the team leader in stolen bases, reached on a free-pass and swiped second. With two runners in scoring position, Charla Echols used a sacrifice fly to extend the lead. With two outs, Reagan Walsh blasted a two run home run. || No. 4 UF, 4-0

BOT 5TH: Kendra Falby led off the fifth inning with an infield single and stole second base. Adams reached on a bunt single, however, Falby was thrown out at the plate trying to score. Wallace sliced a single down the left field line and advanced Adams into scoring position. Echols generated her second RBI of the day with a single up the middle as Wallace advanced to third on the play. Walsh logged her third RBI of the contest with a sacrifice fly to left field. || No. 4 UF, 6-0

INSIDE THE STATS:

  • Lauryn Kinkle recorded the only hit for TSU, while Anayah Baker reached base twice via base-on-balls.
  • Jasmine Brown walked to begin the contest as the Tigers totaled four baserunners in all.
  • The Gators logged six stolen bases in the game, matching their season high.

BEYOND THE BOX:

  • Kinkle recorded a hit in both games this afternoon.
  • UF has swiped six stolen bases in consecutive games, the Gators’ season-high.
  • It was the first appearance of the year for UF starter, Haley Pittman, and her first career start. The sophomore made two appearances last season.

UP NEXT: Tennessee State will complete their fifth game in three days with a rematch against Georgia State, beginning at 8:00am CST / 9:00 EST, at the Pressly Stadium in Gainesville, Florida.
