Clark Atlanta has scored against Albany State since September 28, 2019, a five-yard pass from then CAU quarterback Charles Stafford to Corey King, a garbage-time score in a 54-19 donkey-kicking from the Golden Rams. Last season Albany State steamrolled Clark, 49-0 and the scoreless drought continues with a 35-0 blanking at the hands of the Golden Rams on Saturday.
Albany State scored on their second offensive possession, traveling 68 yards in 10 plays, getting in the end zone on a one-yard run from quarterback Dionte Bonneau to put the Golden Rams up 7-0. Albany State scored again later in the quarter, via a 37-yard field goal off the foot of Eli Mashburn to put ASU up 10-0. The next Golden Rams score came on their first possession of the second quarter after Claudio Quintanilla shanked a 9-yard punt, setting up the Albany State offense at the Clark 36 yard line. Six plays later Kam Ward got in from three yards out to put them 17-0.
Clark would subsequently embark on a 19-play 63-yard drive that included two 4th down conversions and chewed 11:41 off the clock ended up being in vain ,as Quintalla’s 32-yard field goal attempt at the end of the half careened off the left upright.
The CAU miscues and missed opportunities continued to haunt the Panthers in the second half, as their opening drive of the half came up empty , as Quintalla’s 46-yard field goal attempt fell short.
Albany State took advantage, marching 71 yards in 10 plays and scoring their third touchdown of the evening, a 6-yard pass from Bonneau to Joe Shorter. The PAT was no good, leaving score at 23-0.
The Golden Rams would extend their lead to 29-0 on Kam Ward’s second touchdown of the night, this one from 9 yards out. Clark wasn’t the only team experiencing kicking issues, as Mashburn missed his second consecutive PAT.
Followed another forced punt, Albany State took over on their own 20-yard line; 8 plays and 80 yards later Daveon Sanders 7-yard TD run added six more points to Rams. Mashburn missed his third straight PAT, leaving the score at 35-0.
Despite the 35 points, no individual Albany State offensive player’s numbers leap off the page. Bonneau threw for 114 yards and a TD on 10/15 passes; he was also the leading rusher with 78 yards on 5 carries. Kam Ward ran for 70 yards and two scores but it was a struggle for his backfield compatriot Marcuis Fulks , who only ran for 27 yards on eight carries. Ralph Lovett III lead all Ram receivers with 64 yards.
Albany State had won 10 of their last 11 matchups with Clark Atlanta. Up next is a home game against Miles College; kickoff is set for 2pm EST
