D’Angelo Russell Opts Into $6 Million Player Option, But Buyout Rumors Persist

D’Angelo Russell has made his decision.

The veteran guard has exercised his $6 million player option for the 2026-27 season, keeping him under contract with the Washington Wizards. While the move guarantees Russell another year of NBA salary, it may not guarantee his future in Washington.

Russell’s tenure with the Wizards has been anything but conventional. Acquired by Washington in February as part of the blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis to the nation’s capital, Russell never reported to the team following the deal. The Wizards and Russell reportedly explored the possibility of a buyout shortly after the trade, but no agreement was reached.

Now, with Russell officially opting into the final year of his contract, speculation has once again shifted toward a potential buyout that could allow him to enter free agency and join a contender.

The former All-Star spent last season with the Dallas Mavericks, appearing in 26 games and averaging 10.2 points and 4.0 assists while shooting 40.5 percent from the field. Although those numbers represented a dip from his prime years, Russell remains an experienced ball-handler and scorer capable of providing offensive punch off the bench.

For Washington, the decision provides flexibility. The Wizards can keep Russell on the roster, pursue a trade, or negotiate a buyout before training camp. With the franchise continuing its rebuild around a young core, Russell’s veteran presence may not align with the organization’s long-term timeline.

For Russell, opting into the guaranteed money was likely the safest financial move in a free-agent market that has become increasingly cautious when it comes to veteran guards. However, his next destination could ultimately be determined by what happens between now and the start of the season.

Whether he ever suits up in a Wizards uniform is a question that has yet to be answered.
