Jackson State out of Southern Heritage Classic

Since its inception in 1990, Jackson State has competed in the Southern Heritage Classic 28 times.

However it appears that is coming to an end.

Wednesday Jackson State announced its cessation of its participation in the Southern Heritage Classic, stating that their governing athletic conference, the Southwestern Athletic Conference has entered an agreement that is in conflict with that of the Southern Heritage Classic, which was not set to end until 2024.

The annual matchup in Memphis, Tennessee was one of the most anticipated and well attended HBCU Classic, with an average attendance of 46,672 in the 30 games that have been played ( the 2018 and 2020 contests were cancelled due to lightning and COVID-19 respectively).

Tennessee State , nor the SHC has not issued a statement regarding JSU’s departure.
