The future of LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers appears to remain tied together—for now.

According to Brian Windhorst, the Lakers and James are actively engaged in contract negotiations as both sides work toward an agreement ahead of the 2026-27 season.

“I think the focus right now is making a deal with the Lakers. Right now he’s allowed to negotiate with the Lakers and I believe they are negotiating, I believe they’re going back and forth,” Windhorst said.

The update comes after weeks of rumors connecting James to several potential destinations around the league. While speculation has linked the future Hall of Famer to other contenders, Windhorst’s comments indicate that both James and the Lakers are prioritizing a deal that would keep him in Los Angeles.

One of the biggest questions is financial flexibility. Previous reports indicated the Lakers would prefer James to accept a significant pay reduction, though this is diametrically opposed to what James’ camp has espoused that their benefactor is not willing to take a pay cut. Additionally James and his camp would want the team to present a plan to how the funds that were being diverted away from him would be used, in terms of planned player acquisitions.

Even in his 23rd NBA season, LeBron James continues to put up All-Star calibre numbers, averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists on 51.5% from the floor.
