North Carolina A&T Mourns Baseball Legend Al Holland Sr. (’75), Former MLB All-Star and Aggie Hall of Famer

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The North Carolina A&T community is mourning the loss of one of the greatest players in program history.

Former Aggie baseball standout Al Holland Sr. (’75) has passed away, leaving behind a legacy that spans collegiate excellence, Major League Baseball success, and decades of impact on the game.

Holland starred at North Carolina A&T before launching an accomplished 10-year Major League career. A dominant left-handed pitcher, he became one of the most successful professional baseball players to emerge from the Aggies’ program.

During his MLB career, Holland pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, and New York Yankees. He earned National League All-Star honors in 1983 after posting one of the finest relief seasons in baseball. That same year, Holland played a pivotal role in helping the Phillies capture the National League pennant and advance to the World Series.

Known for his devastating fastball and composure in high-pressure situations, Holland established himself as one of baseball’s premier relief pitchers during the early 1980s. He finished his major league career with more than 80 saves and over 300 appearances.

Before reaching the major leagues, Holland helped elevate North Carolina A&T baseball, becoming one of the program’s most accomplished players. His achievements earned him induction into the university’s Athletics Hall of Fame, cementing his status as one of the all-time Aggie greats.
