PINE BLUFF, Ark. – In a crucial matchup on Saturday inside of the Simmons Bank Field the Prairie View A&M University football team clawed there way to a 55-24 victory over the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff Golden Lions.
With the win the Panthers improved to 5-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
The Panthers dominated the game statistically, racking up 491 total offensive yards, while holding the Golden Lions to 301. PVAMU took advantage of short-field situations set up by some miscues.
UAPB put the first 10 points on the board in the first quarter. The Panthers finally got points on the board after a four-yard run touchdown by Jaden Stewart with 3:45 p.m. left on the clock making the scored 10-7 in favor of the Golden Lions.
PVAMU took a 28-17 lead into the locker room after adding two more scores on three grab and go catches From Trazon Connley to Travion Jones(15 yards), Jailon Howard for 45-yards and Ty Holden for 86-yards. UAPB took advantage of a punt fumble in the Panthers endzone for a final score in the first half.
In addition to the Panthers ability to move the ball offensively, PVAMU also got big plays from special teams and the defense. Keyshawn Johnson led the defensive side of the ball with six team high tackles. A recovered fumble was also key for the defense.
Connley was ruthlessly effective on the day, going 8-for-15 for 193 yards and five touchdowns. Connley spread his eight completions around to seven different receivers. Howard gained the most yardage of any of those receivers, catching one pass for 45 yards and a touchdown.
Freshman Connor Wisham led the rushing attack for the Panthers, carrying 11 times for 69 yards. Chris Herron contributed 60 yards on five totes and a touchdown.
The Panthers continued a steady lead going through the final two quarters taking a 55-24 win.
Prairie View A&M will play their final regular season game versus Miss. Valley State for a 1 p.m. kick off in Itta, Bena, Miss.
