The Southern University football family is mourning the loss of former Jaguar standout Virgil “Vee” Williams.
Southern University Football announced the news Wednesday, extending condolences to Williams’ family, friends and loved ones while remembering the impact he made on the Jaguar community.
Williams was a Shreveport native who played for Southern from 2010 through 2013. During his Jaguar career, he established himself as a standout defensive back and return specialist.
In 2013, Williams was named first-team All-SWAC at both defensive back and return specialist. Southern had previously recognized him as one of the conference’s top return threats, and he was also placed on the 2012 College Football Performance Awards watch lists for both kickoff and punt returners.
His 2012 season demonstrated his impact on both sides of the football. Williams recorded 62 tackles, including five tackles for loss, while also contributing 239 kickoff-return yards.
Williams continued his connection to football after his playing career. He most recently served as a defensive backs coach at Calvary Baptist Academy in Shreveport, where he spent two seasons working with the program.
According to KSLA, Williams died in a car crash earlier this week. Players and coaches at Calvary Baptist remembered him as “Coach Vee” and described the lasting impact he had on those around him.
For Southern, Williams’ legacy extends beyond statistics and postseason honors. He was part of the Jaguar football tradition as a player, and his continued work in coaching allowed him to give back to another generation of athletes.
“Forever a Jaguar” is more than a social-media tribute in this case. Williams spent his college career wearing the Southern uniform and left behind a record that remains part of the program’s history.
Southern University and the Jaguar community now mourn the loss of one of their own.
May Virgil “Vee” Williams rest in peace.
