The Tennessee State softball team had a tough showing on Sunday, falling to the Morehead State Eagles by a final score of 6-1. Today’s game marked the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams.
Junior Reina Castillo (4-1) got the ball to start for Tennessee State (9-10, 0-1) and took the loss marking her first of the season. The right-hander went four innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on three hits, allowing one walk and striking out two.
Sophomore Onnika Spencer led the way offensively for the Tigers, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tigers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. TSU got an RBI single from Spencer, scoring senior Nahtali Simpson from second base. The Tigers were unable to hold the lead, as Morehead State scored six times over the remaining five innings to grab the 6-1 win.
GAME NOTES
» Tennessee State’s highest-scoring inning was the second, when it pushed one run across.
» Tennessee State pitchers faced 28 Morehead State hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and six fly balls while striking out five.
» Spencer led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
