The Alabama A&M women’s basketball program received a large donation as the Center for Rural Enterprise and Environmental Justice (CREEJ) donated a golf cart on Tuesday morning at the AAMU Event Center.
“We have a walking campus,” Thornton said about the much-needed gift. “This golf cart will allow us to transport recruits, alumni and potential donors who come to visit our amazing campus. It has endless possibilities and we are so thankful to Dr. Catherine Coleman Flowers and the Center for Rural Enterprise and Environmental Justice for is donation.”
Thornton enters her first season as the head women’s basketball coach at Alabama A&M and has more than 17 years experience as a collegiate coach. Prior to coming to Huntsville’s only Division I University, Thornton spent five seasons as the head coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
“It’s a privilege to be able to support Coach Thornton and her wonderful program,” Dr. Flowers said. “CREEJ is committed to helping Alabama A&M University and the other great educational institutions in Huntsville, and the students they serve. Many of the students live in or will serve communities impacted by climate change or environmental justice.”
Dr. Flowers, a MacArthur Fellow, founded CREEJ in 2019. Its mission is to seek the implementation of best practices to address the reduction of health and economic disparities, improve access to clean air, water, and soil in marginalized rural communities by influencing policy, inspiring innovation, catalyzing relevant research, and amplifying the voices of community leaders. This is done within the context of climate change and through the lens of environmental justice.
