The Albany State baseball team got in the win column for the first time this season , with an 8-6 victory over Shorter University in game 1 of thier Saturday double-header.
The Hawks struck first, getting on the on the on an RBI groundout from Lyndon Weaver scored Jacob Pajer. ASUresponded in the second inning when Chase Kam’s single plated a run and then tacked on another later in the inning with a Hill Corley sacrifice fly.
Shorter tied the game on an ASU infield error on which brought in Donavan Frayer.
The game stayed knotted up until two Golden Rams crossed home plate in the top of the sixth inning and scored two more in the top of the eighth via a Zane Ross triple that brought home Nathan Lloyd and Nicholas Hernandez.
The Hawks responded with a late rally that included scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth, then forcing extra innings by tying the game in the ninth on a two-run Justin Barnes double and a wild pitch brought Pajer, the tying run, home.
Albany State took control of the game with two runs in the top of the tenth via a Ross RBI groundout and Corley single that drove another run in.
Game 2
The second half of the double-dip did not go as well for Albany State as Shorter bounced back to hand the Golden Rams an 8-4 defeat.
The Rams got off to a hot start, scoring three runs in the first inning, but the ASU bats were fairly quiet the rest of the game, only able to generate one more run.
Lyndon Weaver’s homer in the second and the three runs scored in the third, via a two-run single from Cory Mason and Justin Barnes crossing home after an ASU wild pitch, would put the Hawks up 4-3.
Hill Corley’s single up the middle in the fourth inning tied the game at 4.
An infield error by Albany State would be the catalyst for a four-run fourth inning that included an RBI groundout and a two-run blast from Justin Barnes would close out the scoring at 8-4.
Up next for the Golden Rams is their home opener against the Magicians of Lemoyne-Owen February18 and 19.
