MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Football team conquered the CIAA Northern Division for the first time in program history after defeating their rival, Elizabeth City State, 54-8 on Saturday.  The win matched the win total for the most wins in program history.

Chowan claimed the CIAA Northern Division for the first time in program history.

Montre Moore collected seven tackles to eclipse the 100 tackle mark on the season and became the first Chowan Division II player to reach that milestone.

Rashad McKee posted five total touchdowns on the afternoon with three passing touchdowns and two on the ground.  McKee tallied 172 yards passing and 89 yards rushing.  Shavon Harklessrecorded 15 carries for 101 yards and one touchdown.

Malik Tobias added four receptions for 110 yards and two scores.  Simeon Burns and Jakob Streeter added an interception to their totals.  Tavias Higgs recorded a scoop-and-score following one of Cameron Rampersaud’s 1.5 sacks on the day.

Chowan’s defense held Elizabeth City State to 140 yards of total offense including 16 yards through air.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

On the third play from scrimmage, Rashad McKee connected with Malik Tobias for a 51-yard touchdown pass just 1:07 into the ball game.

Both teams were forced to punt on their next possessions as Chowan took advantage of the short field after an 18-yard punt by the Vikings, Rashad McKeeout-ran the defense for a 45-yard touchdown on the first play to put the Hawks up 14-0.

Elizabeth City State started to move the ball on their next possession before Malik Rencher recorded a sack to end the drive.  Chowan’s drive would stall with an interception before Jakob Streeter gave the ball back to the offense with an interception.

Second Quarter:

Shavon Harkless picked up a pair of first downs before Rashad McKee connected with Malik Tobias for a 37-yard circus catch to put the Hawks up 21-0.

Both teams punted on their possessions in the frame as the Hawks led 21-0 at the half.

Third Quarter:

ECSU moved the ball down the field on their opening possession moving the ball into the redzone before Simeon Burns picked off a pass at the goalline to end the drive.

The Hawks would use a 13-play 92-yard drive to cash in on the turnover.  Rashad McKee started the drive with a 25-yard run.  McKee connected with Laurence King and Malik Tobias for first down passes.  Caleb Pierce came in and connected with Tyrek McNeil for a 21-yard completion before McKee punched it in from 8-yards out to lead 27-0.

Following the kick-off, Cameron Rampersaud produced a strip-sack allowing Tavias Higgs to collect the loose football and scamper in from 17-yards out to put the Hawks up 40-0.

Fourth Quarter:

Rashad McKee found Demetrius Moore for a pair of completions as the second completion ended up in the endzone to extend the lead to 34-0.

Chowan’s defense would force a punt on the next possession, but ECSU benefitted from an inadvertent touch to continue their drive at the CU 23.  A pass interference call aided the Vikings, who broke up the shutout with a touchdown and two-point conversion.

After a pair of punts, Tyrek McNeil started the drive with a 27-yard rush before Caleb Pierce posted a 25-yard touchdown run.  Shavon Harkless picked up 40-yards on seven straight carries to post the final touchdown for the Hawks.

UP NEXT

Chowan will get a rematch against Fayetteville State, in a contest that the Hawks lost 13-10 in late September, as Chowan will face the Broncos in the CIAA Championship in Salem, Va. on November 12.  Kick-off is slated for 1pm.
