The Florida A&M women’s basketball team fought back from an 11-point deficit at 56-45 with 3:36 left in the third quarter to knock off the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 69-65 at home Saturday

The Rattlers (9-20, 8-10) had three players score in double figures, led by Ahriahna Grizzle, who had 23 points, five assists and three steals. Olivia Delancy tacked on 14 points, nine rebounds and two steals and Sydney Hendrix chipped in as well with 13 points off of the bench.

Florida A&M out-rebounded Bethune-Cookman 42-40 in Saturday’s game, paced by Delancy’s nine boards.

The Florida A&M defense held Bethune-Cookman shooters to just 28.6 percent from the field, including 20 percent from three-point range.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 9-8 advantage, Florida A&M went on an 11-0 run with 7:25 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Grizzle, to increase its lead to 20-8. The Rattlers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 28-19 advantage. Florida A&M did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 18 of its 28 points close to the basket.

The Rattlers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 44-36.

Bethune-Cookman continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 56-43 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Grizzle, to trim its deficit to 56-53 with 1:30 to go in the third. The Rattlers continued their rally and brought things level at 57-57 entering the fourth quarter. Florida A&M played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 21 points in the paint.

Florida A&M then broke the tie in the game’s final frame, outscoring Bethune-Cookman 12-8 and taking control for good on a Jaliya Sharp free throw with 03:21 left to seize victory by the 69-65 final score. Florida A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 12 points in the paint.
