SWAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week- January 22

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Grambling State University guard Shakyla Hill has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week following two standout performances this past weekend. The league made the announcement Tuesday morning.

Hill, a 5-7 senior from Little Rock, Ark., collected her fifth weekly honor of the season after averaging 23.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 4.5 steals and 1.0 blocks per game while shooting 45.2 percent from the floor and 73.9 percent from the foul line. Versus Texas Southern, Hill posted her second triple-double in a seven-day span, scoring 19 points while grabbing 11 rebounds and dealing 10 assists.

The league’s leading scorer followed that effort with a 28-point, eight-rebound, seven-steal effort against Prairie View A&M, adding three assists and a pair of blocks. Hill made the game-winning bucket with 10 ticks left, sealing the 64-63 Grambling win with a blocked shot on the Lady Panthers’ final possession.

Since conference play began, Hill has averaged 23.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game – each mark is tops among all SWAC players in league action — and  she continues to lead the SWAC in points, steals, assists and minutes per game.

Other Notable Performances:
– Southern University’s Brittany Rose scored 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting during a 74-67 win over Mississippi Valley State.

– Texas Southern junior forward Niya Mitchell averaged 16.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals, 2.0 assists and 1.0 blocks per game while shooting 65.2 percent from the field as the Lady Tigers went 1-1. In a setback versus Grambling, Mitchell went for 20 points, 14 rebounds, five steals, four assists and two blocks.

– Mississippi Valley State freshman guard Sydnie Ward scored a season-high 18 points during a 74-67 loss to Southern.

-Alabama State freshman guard Ayana Emmanuel scored 17 points with five rebounds and four assists in leading the Lady Hornets to a 60-46 win over arch-rival Alabama A&M.
