Tennessee State moed to 3-0 on the young season , as they completed their opening three-game homestead with a 87-76 victory over Alabama A&M.

With leading scorer Jr. Clay, saddled with foul trouble and with his shooting stroke a bit off the mark, the TSU bench picked up the slack with 34 points, 20 of which came from Christian Brown who made his season debut.

Although the first half was an intense physical affair , both teams seemed to find some degree of offensive success. However the Tennessee State defense was able to force 12 turnovers, which along with the 50% they shot from the field, and the eight three-pointers knocked down in the opening half, allowed the Tigers to take a 47-35 lead into halftime.

The Bulldogs drew to within five points at 50-45 on a pair of Cameron Tucker free throws with 16:32 left in the game, but the Tigers responded with six consecutive points,i ncluding one of Brown’s four three-pointers to push the advantage to 56-45.

Alabama A&M continued to fight but was never able to draw within 7 points. Although TSU cooled off considerably from the land of three in the second half, only shooting 3-13, those three were timely makes.

For Alabama A&M, Dalin Smith led a trio of Bulldogs in double figures with 23 points on 8-12 from the floor. Garrett Hicks put in 20 points and finally misfired from downtown for the first time on the season, but did connect on 4 of his 7 three-point attempts. Cameron Tucker chipped in with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and a block.

Christian Brown looked good in his return from a foot injury in his first action of the season, coming off the bench to score 20 points and knocking down 4 of his 5 shots from downtown. Three other Tigers that reached or surpassed the ten point barrier- Marcus Fitzgerald with 17, Jr.Clay’s 13 and Zool Kueth with 10 off the bench.

This was the 23rd meeting between the schools; Tennessee leads the series 18-5.

Up next for the Tiger is a trip to Carbondale, IL, for a meeting with the Salukis of Southern Illinois this Thursday. Tip-off time is scheduled for 7:00 pm CST.
