TSU’s James Lowery named OVC-Big South Special Teams Player of the Week

Tennessee State kicker earned OVC-Big South Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance Saturday against Gardner-Webb.

Lowery, a redshirt junior, on two crucial field goals in Tennessee State’s 27-25 win over Gardner Webb in the John Merritt Classic. He connected on a then career long 49-yard field goal with 6:32 left in the contest that pushed the TSU lead to 24-19.  Less than six minutes later and the Tigers down by a point at 25-24, he would be called upon once again, and he would come through, converting a 50-yard field that gave TSU the victory.

Lowery, who has expanded his role from just exclusively handling kickoffs, was also perfect on the day on extra points, converting all three. Since going 1/3 on field goals in the season opener against Notre Dame, the Lauderdale, FL native has not missed a kick.

This is the second consecutive week A Tennessee State player has garnered conference honors, linebacker James Green was named Defensive Player of the Week in the week prior.
