From VALDOSTA, GA – It was two and a half hours late, but the Albany State (2-1, 0-0 SIAC) verses Valdosta State (3-0, 0-0 GSC) game wasn’t one of those fancy high-scoring games.  Instead it was a gritty battle where the Blazers who had torched their previous two opponents by scoring 50+ points had to earn every yard.  In the end the Blazers would prevail 21-3, but ASU hsowed grit in the rain-drenched game an Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. In his first start of the season, Albany State freshman quarterback Kelias Williams accounted for three touchdowns as the Golden Rams blew out Fort Valley State 34-9 in front of a crowd of 13,391 in the 28th Fountain City Classic. ASU got the scoring going in the first quarter after a 10-play, 42-yard drive ended with a Gabriel Ballinas 42-yard field goal, giving the Rams a 3-0 lead. The Albany State Golden Rams were ranked number 8 in the Division II Super Region Two playoff standings. As only the top seven in each of the four regions make the playoffs, the Rams could ill afford any missteps the rest of the season. The Albany State Golden Rams overcame a one point halftime deficit and then pulled away late in their 34-10 victory over the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers. Defense was the story of the first half for both ball clubs as the respective units for the Rams and Tigers gave up a combined 107 yards of total offense. Albany State, powered by a defense that held Lincoln-Missouri scoreless in the second half, defeated the Blue Tigers 30-10. Albany State’s Marquez Thomas’ interception set the Golden Rams’ offense on the Lincoln 22-yard line. ASU would take advantage of the turnover on a Kelan Fraise 1 yard touchdown run. It was a tough day at the office for the Albany State Golden Rams. ASU was on the wrong side of a 48-16 beatdown courtesy of West Georgia University. The Wolves came out of the gate on fire, scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions, two coming on touchdown passes from UWG quarterback Willie Candler and the third on a run from Candler.
